Shower and tub valves — the job that needs a plumber

This is the fixture work most handymen decline, and correctly so. A shower valve lives inside the wall, its connections are soldered or crimped in a confined space, and getting to it usually means opening tile or cutting an access panel in the wall behind.

It is also the fixture with the clearest safety case. Older two-handle valves have no pressure balancing — when someone flushes a toilet, cold demand drops elsewhere and the shower goes scalding. Modern pressure-balanced and thermostatic valves prevent that. If you have small children or elderly parents in the house and an original two-handle valve, this is a genuinely worthwhile upgrade rather than a comfort item.

Outdoor spigots and hose bibs

Hose bibs take a beating in this climate. A standard bib holds water right at the wall, and when it freezes, it splits — usually inside the wall where you will not find out until you turn it on in April and water pours into the basement.

Frost-free sillcocks solve this by placing the actual valve seat twelve inches or more inside the heated envelope, so the water drains back when you close it. Converting a standard bib to a frost-free is a modest job and it is one of the better preventive investments in a Virginia home. Note that a frost-free bib only works if you remove the hose in the fall — a connected hose traps water and defeats the whole design.

Water lines to appliances

Refrigerator ice makers, dishwashers, washing machines and pot fillers all need a supply connection, and all of them fail eventually. We use braided stainless lines rather than plastic tubing, install an accessible shutoff for each, and route lines so they are not pinched behind an appliance that will be pushed back into place.

The washing machine box deserves special mention. Rubber washer hoses fail catastrophically and there is no fixture trap to limit the damage — a burst supply hose puts open water into a laundry room until someone finds it. Braided stainless hoses and a single-lever shutoff are cheap insurance.
